Prequel Fic Ch. 1

in space verse
A/N: Yes, I know, I should be working on (yes, I still don't believe I'm writing it) the Vampire!Fic or Twisted Crossover, but this gnawed at my brain. Also, really, really short chapter. But it works (I think).

Disclaimer: Nobody belongs to me. The story, situations and places do, however.

Title: I Have Heard The Voices Dying.

Synopsis: Two centuries before the events of 'That Guy With The Glasses In Space', the Battle of Santa Muerte took place. It was this battle that helped to rob the crew of the TANDEM of their humanity, of the full scope of their morality, of their love. What events took place on planet Orcus? Will contain spoilers for 'In Space'. Sort of, anyway.

I will show you fear in a handful of dust

Linkara had been lying on his bunk, dozing quite happily when someone slammed the door of his bunkroom open and he fell, quite literally, out of bed.

Seeing as he shared the bunkroom with three other people, the room had two bunk beds. And he was lying on the top one.

Needless to say, he let out a string of swear words as his head made a quite impressive thunk on the floor.

“Owww…” he said finally, when he’d exhausted all the curses in his vocabulary. Opening his eyes, he glared up at Spoony, the poor fool who had had the gall to wake him.

“Spoony, man, what the hell did you do that for?” he groaned, picking himself up and dusting off his poor hat, which had thankfully not been crushed in his fall.

“We’re going into battle again.”

Linkara froze halfway to putting the hat on.

“…Again?”

“Again.”

“…In the black or planetside?”

“Planetside. We’re assaulting the Gamer Faction’s base on Orcus.”

Linkara felt himself start to tremble. He hated battle.

“Proxy or in person?”

“We don’t know yet. We’ll have to get a good look at their base on Orcus before we call for reinforcements.”

Linkara gulped. Unlike a lot of the other members of the Critic Faction, he hadn’t yet had a full alteration. The most he’d had was a slight upgrade of his healing, meaning he healed faster, but not fast enough for his liking.

He glanced at his wrist. The only visible sign thus far of his alteration was that his veins stuck up a little darker, making his skin look even more translucent than it was.

“Anyway. Critic’s called a meeting in the War Room. We’ll discuss tactics and then move out.”

“Yeah. Yeah, I’ll be there in a sec.”

Linkara’s mouth was dry and his eyes felt sore. He wanted the war to be over but, in his chest, there was a cold little ball of hatred and defiance that wanted to hurt them, wanted to hurt the Gamer Faction.

Goddamnit, he couldn’t even remember why, just that he had to.

Taking a deep breath so that he wouldn’t cry, Linkara put on his hat and glasses, shrugged on his coat and headed off to the War Room.

“We don’t yet have any information on what the Gamer Faction is up to on Orcus at the moment,” said Nostalgia Chick, frowning as a hologram of planet Orcus came up.

“Basic facts about Orcus anyway,” said Nostalgia Critic.

“Okay, then. Orcus is located in Trebaruna System. One moon, Kali. Terraformed, but uninhabited.”

“Why?” asked Spoony.

“Unlike most terraformed planets, Orcus has many tectonic plates. In the region of twenty, in fact – they haven’t managed to count them all.”

“So nobody wanted to hide out in a land made of earthquakes and volcanoes,” said Linkara with a twist of his mouth.

“Got it in one,” said Chick.

“Why set up base there, then?” asked Coldguy, pulling on his lower lip thoughtfully.

“No one’ll go looking for armies on a deserted planet,” commented 8-Bit Mickey, arms folded.

“According to this,” said Nostalgia Chick, “Orcus was abandoned after a giant earthquake. Before then, it was a scientific base, examining the reactions of Orcus’ plates to terraforming. They wanted to see if there was some way of using terraforming techniques to link up some of Orcus’ tectonic plates and make the land more, well, stable.”

“Let me guess: Their experiments made the land more unstable, right?”

“No, actually. They almost succeeded; it’s just that they were interrupted before they could put the final measure in place.”

“Wait a sec…” said Linkara, “Does that mean…does that mean that the Gamer Faction may have finished where they left off? While it’s not very fun to compliment them, you have to admit that the Gamer Faction isn’t exactly made up of the stupidest people in the universe.”

“So they’ve managed to join the tectonic plates?” asked Handsome Tom.

“Maybe. We don’t actually know,” admitted Chick, “Best case scenario is that they joined the plates. Worst is that they did nothing. Most likely is that they’ve stabilized their motions for now.”

“Isn’t that dangerous?” said MarzGurl, “I mean, it’s been a while since I did geology, but isn’t unnatural for tectonic plates to not move at all?”

“They’ve probably made them stable enough that they can function in the centre of the largest one with little difficulty,” said Critic, folding his arms and scowling at the hologram.

“Well, it’s nice to know that,” said Rollo T, “But does that actually affect our battle plans?”

“It might,” said Nostalgia Chick, “We’ll need to hack into their database, discover their records – see if there’s any clue as to what they may have achieved. If they haven’t achieved anything, we may have to be careful; we don’t want to get stuck in a sudden volcanic eruption or an earthquake that’s at the top of the Richter scale.”

“And if we fail to find out anything?” said Spoony.

The Nostalgia Critic smirked; there was no humour in it.

“Then this war is gonna get real interesting real fast…”

*sniffles* Knowing what happens to all of them, this is just too sad.

But I like it. :D

Poor Linkara.

I'm most evidently a sick little monkey then, because I can't wait to see how they all went from these relatively sane people to the nightmare fuel-inducing crazies (for lack of a better term) we saw in the "In Space" fic. :P

I can't look forward to writing them.

Of course, part of the fun comes from the fact that the Battle of Santa Muerte was about the time certain people got their bodies changed...

Gee, let's see if she can't write an even MORE depressing fic!
*gets the popcorn and a box of tissues*

*wibbles and holds back a laugh with great difficulty*

*wibbles* Oh, baby ...

Taking a deep breath so that he wouldn’t cry, Linkara put on his hat and glasses, shrugged on his coat and headed off to the War Room.
I'm getting a flashback to a certain Angel episode in S1 where Angel is walking out and putting on his coat dramatically and Cordy and Wesley following him ...

Oh my god, I was looking up tectonic plates TODAY.

The Nostalgia Critic smirked; there was no humour in it.
“Then this war is gonna get real interesting real fast…”

ULP.

Hang on ... so, the Gamer Faction wants to kill the Nostalgia Critic, and the Critic wants to stay alive, and that's why they're fighting? Is this all AVGN vs. NC rivalry, helped along by the past couple centuries of scrimaging, or what? Also, whose side is Suede on? He wasn't at the Final Battle ...

That made me laugh so hard it snapped me right out of the headache I'm starting to develop.

Oh my god, I was looking up tectonic plates TODAY.
I find tectonic plates very interesting. If I didn't loathe educational institutions so much, I might do a degree in geology. As it is, I have a friend whose brains I can pick for that.

Yes. Yes it is.

Also, whose side is Suede on?
Critic's. He appears next chapter.

Um, you're welcome!

Tectonic plates are AWESOME! (I have no idea why I geek out about them so much, it's kinda weird ...)

Yes. Yes it is.
Gah! Just make out and end this war, guys! *whaps both of them upside the head, and then flees, because the AVGN scares me*

Helloo! I'm back.

Let's see... shall we do this like last time? I believe we shall...

Man, time has really loosened Linkara's tongue. Oh yes, we mustn't harm the hat. Poor Link. I can imagine that he wouldn't want to fight. Can't we all just get along? Link, you may not remember, but inquiring minds really wanna know. Especially since this seems to take place before the Critic disappears.

Oooh Film Brain! It's nice to see more people featured than were in the original. And I see this is back before Handsome Tom and 8-Bit Mickey became Gamer-Nerd-Sweetheart-Battalion-whatever-they-are. And while they aren't dumb, none of them are rocket scientists either. I'm feeling a stretch that they managed to stop tectonic movement of a whole planet, even if most of the work had been done for them.

It's sad that none of them truly smile anymore, even here in the prequel.

Oooh Film Brain!

...oh fuck. There's a continuity issue I need to work out...

Man, time has really loosened Linkara's tongue.
Hey, he literally fell out of his bed and konked his head. I don't think you'd be able to keep a civil tongue in your mouth either.

I'm feeling a stretch that they managed to stop tectonic movement of a whole planet, even if most of the work had been done for them.
...yeah, I'm just going with the whole 'Mad Science' route of thinking. I just...yeah. I needed an excuse for them to be hesitant about fighting and...it just happened.
